Through an investment by both the city of Providence and its key educational institutions, the cost of tearing down the defunct I-195 highway is used instead to install all the necessary infrastructures onto the existing highway deck, turning it into a continuous conduit which development can connect to. This provides the area with dedicated systems for lab buildings and other typologies. The shared mechanical and infrastructural components minimize development cost to the investing institutions and simultaneously intensify development and urban activity in the city. While feeding on the energy of College Hill and reconnecting the Jewelry District to the downtown-proper, our proposal preserves the scenographic vantage point the highway provides—the experience of the American city.
